Institute of Mathematics - 50 years of construction, development and integration (1970-2020)

On October 16, 2020, the Institute of Mathematics, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), solemnly held its 50th anniversary. The event drew the participation of Nguyen Huu Do, Deputy Minister of Education and Training; Assoc.Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, VAST Vice President; Professor Ngo Bao Chau, Scientific Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics; Professor Vu Ha Van, Scientific Director of Big Data Research Institute; Nguyen Quan, former Minister of Science and Technology; and leaders of institutes, centers and functional departments under VAST, and representatives of universities such as Hanoi University of Education, Thai Nguyen University and Polytechnic University.

Overview of the anniversary

From the Institute of Mathematics, there was Prof. Dr. Phung Ho Hai, Director of the Institute of Mathematics, scientists who were former leaders of the Institute, former members of the Institute of Mathematics over the period with a large number of staff currently workers and collaborators with the Institute of Mathematics, representatives of the family of late Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, the late Minister Ta Quang Buu, the late Professor Le Van Thiem and the late Professor Hoang Tuy.

On February 5, 1969, the first year the North had been silent of bombs after four years of heavy bombardment, the Government issued a decision to establish the Mathematical Institute. More than a year later, when Prof. Le Van Thiem was appointed as Deputy Director, the Institute was officially put into operation. Since its operation, the Institute of Mathematics is 50 years old (1970-2020).

At the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Sc. Phung Ho Hai briefly presented the Summary Report on the history of establishment, construction, development and integration of the Institute of Mathematics. In early days, the force of the Institute was very thin, only 6 doctors and 20 researchers. In the late 1980s, the institute's staff were about 80 researchers. However,  at the beginning, Prof. Le Van Thiem and Prof. Hoang Tuy tried to build the Institute according to international standards by establishing a system of scientific activities with regular seminars, gradually forming research groups, and especially an international publication requirement. For about 30 years, from 1975 to 2005, out of more than 4,000 publications listed on MathSciNet with Vietnamese authors, more than 50% have authors from the Institute of Mathematics. As of 2019, 91 mathematicians have been recognized as professors in the whole country, and 30 have been conferred at the Institute of Mathematics.

Up to now, the Institute of Mathematics has published more than 2400 international articles, training 176 doctors and more than 600 masters. The quality of international publication is increasing, especially in recent years, making the Institute's reputation in the world mathematics community. Many researchers from the Institute have been awarded prestigious domestic and foreign awards, elected to scientific academies in the world, awarded honorary doctorate degrees from prestigious universities, invited in the editorial boards of prestigious journals, and invited to teach and research at many universities and major research institutes around the world.

Assoc.Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, VAST Vice President, made a speech to congratulate the Institute of Mathematics

Speaking at the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh said, “Looking back on the 50 years of construction and development, experiencing many difficulties and challenges, today we can say that the Institute of Mathematics has affirmed its role and position as a prestigious institute, with many scientific achievements. The Institute of Mathematics is always one of the leading scientific units in the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in terms of research achievements, reflected in the quantity and quality published annually in national journals. Especially, many scientific research results in some directions of the Institute have reached high levels in the world. In terms of training, the Institute is known as one of the high quality postgraduate training centers in mathematics in Vietnam.”

At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Phung Ho Hai sent sincere thanks to the delegates who attended the anniversary and the attention and the creation of favorable conditions by VAST, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Government Office for the Institute of Mathematics’ development over the recent years.
