Institute of Mechanics successfully develops 6 degrees of freedom robot system suitable for production in Vietnam

A group of researchers of the Department of Mechanics and Electronics under the Institute of Mechanics of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) has successfully developed a sample of the 6-degree freedom robot arm machine named SM6, which is oriented to be applied in industrial production. and many other areas. SM6 Robot System is the main product of the project: “Complete and master technology in designing and manufacturing industrial 6 degrees of freedom robot; apply products into industrial production line” conducted by the Institute of Mechanics under the program “Development of a number of hi-tech industries”, which was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision 347/QD-TTg dated February 22, 2013 and managed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The SM6 robot system is inherited and developed from the eRobot product of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology which was successfully tested in 2011.


The main parameters of SM6 include:




Robot SM6, pilot operated at worshop 197 – the Defense Economic Technical Industry Corporation (GAET), is used in mechanic processing and production, in particular in metal welding of the frame production process.


Mr. Cu Duc Thuan, Director of workshop 197 said that the installation of robots is quite simple. The robot is small in size, and can operate continuously one shift per day with high stability. The power consumption of the robot arm is about 1.5kW. In particular, the robot has the ability to coordinate with workers and other machines when pre-programmed. “We hope the team will continue to develop the product so that it can perform more functions, such as painting, welding and cleaning, in order to provide more options for domestic mechanics foundations.

The success of SM6 opens the way for further research to reduce the price of products compared to imported ones (the price of importing a robot of the same type ranges from VND600-700 million), optimizing the functions and technical characteristics, preparing replacement equipment and maintenance process, developing intelligent software control applications, controlling the robot on Internet access mobile devices.

On August 23, 2018, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a meeting with leading experts in the field of mechatronics, Robittic - Mechatronis to evaluate and test the results of the project. The Evaluation and Acceptance Council said that the project had achieved the main objectives. It can be said that this is one of the first projects in Vietnam to produce a robot which includes both hardware and software, high creativity, and suits the 4th Industrial Revolution. One of the important factors of the product is to expand its applications so that it is applied more quickly in industrial production in Vietnam, contributing to bringing high economic efficiency; promoting hi-tech, intelligent and advanced production.
