Workshop on Dissemination of Science and Technology Knowledge: Cosmology and extrasolar planets

On 19/06/2020, the Vietnam Physics Association together with the Vietnam Space Center, the Institute for Scientific Information and the Institute of Physics, VAST, organized a Knowledge Dissemination Workshop on science and technology with the theme: Cosmology and extrasolar planets.

The seminar was organized on the occasion of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics to be awarded to astronomers – cosmologists for their achievements in building the theoretical foundations of cosmology and the discovery of exoplanets orbiting stars like the Sun. The workshop aims to transfer knowledge to the community, as well as foster scientific passion for researchers, students, and those who love the field of cosmology and astronomy.

Overview of the workshop

Participants listened to three scientists interpret and impart knowledge about Science and Technology, including: (1) “Discovering new planets outside the solar system” presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Trung – President of the Institute of Physics; (2) “Golden Age of Cosmology” presented by PhD. Do Quoc Tuan – Advanced Research Institute of Phenikaa, Phenikaa University and; (3) “Astrophysics in the new era” presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Ngoc Diep – Vietnam Space Center.

On the topic “Discovering new planets outisde the solar system”, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Van Trung introduced the history of searching for extrasolar planets, the physical principles and methods used today, such as the Doppler effect, celestial phenomena, the gravitational microscopic effect as well as observed objects such as stars similar to the sun and dwarfs. Future research trends are also mentioned, including searching for exoplanets similar to the earth, looking for signs of biological activity. Acorrding to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Van Trung, in the search for extraterrestrial life, the discovery and observation of extrasolar planets – where exist the suitable conditions for life to form and develop – is a very important but challenging first step. That’s why humans have to search for extrateresstrial life, and learn the molecules involved in the process of life.

Dr. Do Quoc Tuan, Phenikaa Advanced Research Institute, Phenikaa University, briefly summarized the important research results that humans have achieved in this golden era: Cosmology is an area of Astronomy as well as Physics, study the formation and development of the Universe at the widest distance scale. Thanks to the development of science and technology, especially Physics, human’s understanding of the Universe has become more and more clear and accurate. Einstein’s general theory of relativity is a great theoretical tool, which has been helping physicists and cosmologists achieve incredible cosmological research achievments throughout the 20th century and early decades of the 21st century. There are research results that completely change the way people observe and imagine the universe. It can be said that we are living in the golden era of cosmology. The biggest prizes in Physics, such as the Nobel Prize or the Dirac Medal, recently have been awarded to cosmologists.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Ngoc Diep – Vietnam Space Center presented the big questions of astrophysics, comented on the trends and approaches to solving these big questions. Thereby giving listeners a perspective on astrophysics in the new century.
