Workshop on VNREDSat-2 Satellite System Technical Proposal

In the framework of preparation activities for the 2nd Earth Observation Optical Satellite Project of Vietnam (VNREDSat-2), on June 27th, 2019, the Institute of Space Technology coordinated with experts of Airbus Defense & Space Company, France, to organize a workshop to propose the main technical configuration for the VNREDSat-2 satellite system.

vetinhVnredsat2.a1Airbus Defense & Space is a company that has built many earth observation satellite systems for countries around the world. At the workshop, Airbus experts presented more details on the technical proposal of the new satellite system, whereby VNREDSat-2 satellite will have more preeminent specifications than the current VNREDSat-1 system. They are: the time of orbit mining is over 10 years; spatial resolution of the pixel reaches less than one metre; more flexible satellite with shooting angles up to +/- 45 degrees; satellite stability is many times better, allowing for more accurate photography; The time for capture of an area is about two days; the control processes are designed to automatically minimize the effort and manpower required to operate the system. These advantages will allow VNREDSat-2 satellite to be exploited more effectively than the current satellite system, promising to expand more remote sensing imaging applications in Vietnam.

In addition, the workshop also introduced a plan and objective of training technology transfer, manufacturing process, and associated facilities. It is expected that when the new project finished, Vietnamese engineers will create a small system of earth observation satellite beams. This plan is evaluated in accordance with the current and future development trends of the field of earth observation satellites.

Vietnam's first earth observation satellite, VNREDSat-1, was launched into space with VEGA boosters from the Kourou launch site, French Guyana,  in May 2013. Since 2013, Vietnam’s first Earth Observation Satellite (VNREDSat-1) has been operated and exploited, showing great and effective contributions in the fields of socio-economic development and national security and defence. According to the evaluation of domestic and foreign experts, VNREDSat-1 will be able to operate stably for two years. Therefore, maintaining the source of remote sensing image for the needs of Vietnam is urgent and it is necessary to soon put into orbit in a new optical satellite with advanced specifications to replace VNREDSat-1 satellite, said Pham Minh Tuan, vice director of the Institute of Space Technology.
